Similar
to director Yamada's previous film, TWILIGHT SAMURAI, this one also tells
the story of a proud warrior who must learn to fit inside a changing world.
The story opens as the age of the "sword and samurai" is coming
to an end. The hero, Munezo (Masatoshi Nagase), is a swordsman - well-trained
in the art of kakushiken (hidden blade) - but more interested in living
a quiet life. He falls in love with a family servant (Takako Matsu) whom
he considers untouchable because of the class difference between them.
Before the conclusion, Munezo is forced to change his mind about both
physical combat and the woman.
